ASCIP Webinar – Understanding Disability Identity After Spinal Cord Injury

Wednesday, July 1st, 2026, 12pm ET

Presenter:  Erin Andrews-Ash, PsyD, ABPP

This presentation addresses disability identity as a critical yet often overlooked aspect of adjustment and adaptation following spinal cord injury (SCI). While rehabilitation frequently emphasizes physical functioning and independence, many individuals with SCI also navigate profound shifts in self-concept, belonging, relationships, meaning, and social identity. Disability identity can influence psychological adjustment, community integration, self-advocacy, relationships, parenting, vocational engagement, and overall quality of life.

This webinar will examine contemporary perspectives on disability identity development after SCI, including the impact of ableism, societal narratives about disability, and the tension many individuals experience between medical and disability-affirmative frameworks. Drawing from rehabilitation psychology, disability studies, and lived-experience perspectives, the presenter will discuss how rehabilitation professionals can support identity exploration and foster more affirming, person-centered care.
