SCI Fellowship

MATCH PROGRAMS
Candidates applying to spinal cord injury fellowships participate in the NRMP Match. The NRMP Match occurs in the fall of each year, and fellowship positions typically begin the following July. ACGME-approved SCI Fellowships do not participate in ERAS for the application process. Instead, there is a common application that is used for applicants. You can download this application here or by contacting any of the programs.

If you have questions about the process, you can contact Jelena Svircev MD at jsvircev@uw.edu or James Wilson DO at JamRWilson@kessler-rehab.com for further details.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Spinal Cord Injury Medicine fellowship is one year in length
  • Certification in SCI medicine is offered to diplomats of all ABMS member boards, particularly from specialties directly related to the care of persons with spinal cord injury whose diplomats wish to be certified in SCI medicine (e.g. anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, and urology).
  • Exceptional applicants from non-ACGME residency programs may be approved to complete a spinal cord injury fellowship, however only applicants that have completed an approved ACGME residency are eligible for board certification in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine through the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Due to funding limitations, some programs are not able to accept applicants ineligible to sit for SCIM Boards through the ABPMR. Contact individual programs for specifics related to application eligibility.

IMPORTANT 2026 DATES

  • For applicants interested in fellowship positions starting July 2027, please complete the common application and submit to programs individually. The application window generally runs from April to August.
  • Suggested submission window for application: April 1, 2026 - August 15, 2026
  • Match Opens: August 5, 2026
  • Ranking Opens: September 2, 2026
  • Ranking Closes: October 7, 2026
  • Match Day: October 21, 2026

It is highly recommended to submit on or before August 15th to give adequate time for programs to review your application and arrange for an interview. Interviews may be conducted from late spring through early fall depending on program preference. After the MATCH has concluded for the year, programs may have open fellowship positions that can be filled outside of the NRMP MATCH. Please contact programs directly to inquire about open fellowship positions.
