SCI Review

This program is designed for physicians and health care professionals as a comprehensive and up-to-date review of all major topics in spinal cord medicine. This course will be especially helpful for physicians who are preparing for the Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Sub-specialty Certification and Maintenance of Certification Examination. The course is designed as: A state-of-the-art review on the assessment of patients with spinal cord injury/disorder. A comprehensive review of current medical management and rehabilitation strategies in spinal cord impairment. A review of information and strategies in preparation for the Sub-specialty Certification and Maintenance of Certification Examination.

Rehabilitation nursing: THIS is who we are! Helping those affected with SCI to rebuild their lives while creating solutions with the best clinical outcomes, maximizing independence and promotion quality of life.
Vision for the SCIN pre-conference: As the only nursing organization dedicated exclusively to promoting excellence in the nursing care of individuals with SCI we are responsible for educating and challenging for change when evidence and clinical practice guidelines lead to a need for change. The pre-con allows nursing leaders from across the country to come together to teach attendees about critical clinical topics and allows the nurses to self-reflect and bring back ideas to their facilities to improve care all along the continuum of care following a SCI.
The 2024 SCIN Pre-Con will provide the learners with the opportunity to engage with and learn from fellow nursing experts in the rehabilitation space. The focus of the sessions is to go beyond the basic bowel, bladder and skin topics and challenge SCI nurses to become leaders of the nursing field while using clinical evidence to support holistic rehabilitation of the spinal cord injured patient.
The format will be one hands-on clinical workshop led by a top-notch expert in the urology nursing field followed by 6 one-hour didactic sessions. Leaders of the session will incorporate slide decks as well as integrative formats as fits their individual sessions.
The clinical topics will be:
- Neurogenic lower unrinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD): Michael Kennelly, MD and Amy Dannels-McClure, RN, ND will discuss UTI prevention an importance of catheter choice on outcomes for patients with SCI. Participants will then do a 30 minute hands-on workshop with varying manufacturers of catheters and the impact of their innovation for SCI/D patients.This is a sponsored session by manufacturers.
- Neurogenic bowel dysfunction: Discussion of the “bowel management” team approach with OT and nursing. Beginning with education on neurogenic bowel and impact to bowel function, then focusing on developing a basic bowel management program, ending with case presentations of current practice of different “bowel teams” around the country.
- WOCN corner: SCI specific wound assessment , treatment and prevention. Patient assessments/devices that patients are using at home to prevent pressure ulcers at home.Innovation for prevention. Speaker will provide an update on the science for wound prevention and treatment at home.The attendees will then complete 3-4 case studies where a wound - either a model or picture - will be presented with case notes. Attendees will then come up with assessment and treatment plan and work together with speaker on plans.
- Peer Mentorship: Latest research on peer mentorship will be presented, including: outcomes of peer mentorship both in the in-patient and out-patient settings, recent review of survey research on what people want and what works for peer mentorship programs. The session will also include practical guidance for the development and implementation of peer mentoring programs in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
- Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG): A focus on Autonomic Dysreflexia (AD) and Osteoporosis Prevention

- Osteoporosis: Nurses are in a prime position to educate SCI/D patients about bone health, to reduce risk of fractures that can result in significant morbidity and mortality. This session will review current CPG and discuss a comprehensive approach to bone health considerations for SCI/D. Laurel Short, DNP will utilize a case-based approach and clinical expertise to discuss application of CPG, nutrition and exercise modalities, and risk management for bone health.
- AD: Focus on the clinical practice guidelines for management and prevention as well as clinical expertise from the field from APP practicing in SCI rehabilitation in OP setting.
- Special guest presenting on Sexuality and relationships after SCI: This session will focus on not only the physicality of sexual intercourse after SCI, but the intimacy and deeper connections with other human beings after and injury will be discussed as well.
TLC Pre Con: A Sub-Specialization Approach to Spinal Cord Injury Care

Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has a unique approach to the integration of research in the clinical setting and implements a systems/sub-specialization approach to spinal cord injury care. This approach, used throughout this hospital system, helps provide patients care for all aspects of their recovery. This interdisciplary approach provides patients a holistic experience to achieve better outcomes. This full day workshop will provide review of sub-specialties in spinal cord injury rehab, including: ventilator weaning, pulmonary rehab, pelvic health, gait training, research, and more.
